Indian Hills Community College, Iowa BioDevelopment offers courses, workshops, and conferences for water treatment, distribution, and wastewater treatment CEUs recognized by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Water and Wastewater Operators, managers, lab analysts, inspectors, and those interested in water quality measurements would benefit from attending these events.


There is no cost to students enrolled in these courses for books, handouts and supplies. These costs will be paid for (as long as funds are available) by grant awarded to Indian Hills Community College, Iowa BioDevelopment under the President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration (Grant #ES-14312-04-06). There are limited scholarships available for municipal employees in the Indian Hills Community College district who attend water or wastewater courses. These scholarships are from the Jeanne Merkle Water/Wastewater Scholarship Fund provided by donations from AceOps, Management and Operational Resources (MOR), and M & M Environmental Services. 30-Hour Basic Water Distribution (Course # 08/Yr VOC 1131 B09)

This entry-level course provides a foundation and builds on knowledge about water sources and characteristics, math, hydraulics, storage, booster stations, distribution system facilities, valves, hydrants, meters, water quality considerations, O&M, disinfection, sampling, laboratory safety, administration, law and regulations. This course, along with six months experience will satisfy the eligibility requirement for the Iowa DNR Distribution Grade I. This course is also a good review for anyone planning to take the Distribution Grade II exam. 30-Hour Basic Wastewater Collection (Course # 08/YR VOC 1274 B01)

This entry-level course provides a foundation and builds on knowledge about wastewater sources and characteristics, collection systems, sewer renewal and rehab, inspection and testing, pipeline cleaning and maintenance, lift stations, equipment maintenance, safety, and administration. This entry-level course, along with six months experience will satisfy the eligibility requirement for the IWPCA Collection Class I. This course is also a good review for anyone planning to take the Collection Class II exam. Water and Wastewater Troubleshooting (Course # 08/YR VOC 1131 B12)

Every water or wastewater operator can benefit from learning problem-solving/troubleshooting techniques. What is Troubleshooting and how can you use it to operate and OPTIMIZE the performance of your water and/or wastewater system? In this course we will define "troubleshooting" and "optimizing." This will be a hands-on course that will cover common and not so common troubleshooting techniques. We will use your data, so make sure you bring your Water Supply Permit and/or NPDES Permit, your last 12 months of MOR's (monthly operating reports), a good calculator, and design

parameters for your facility (flow rates, loadings, influent/raw).

This course is designed to train managers to use sound business practices in managing a utility.

Courses on water and wastewater management are few and far between. Come and interact with other managers or potential managers during this interactive 5-hour course. Among other things we'll identify functions of a manager, the benefits of planning, organizing and controlling, delegation, emergency/security planning, job descriptions, employee evaluations, how to communicate with your boss(es), your board, and your customers, and discuss ethics. Learn about basic theory, design, and operation of facultative lagoons. Classroom discussion will include NPDES permitting, effluent monitoring, level control, and an introduction to troubleshooting and lagoon math. This course is a good review for anyone planning to take the Grade 1 Lagoon exam. Please bring your NPDES permit, a recent MOR, actual dimensions of your lagoons, and a calculator.

This entry-level course, along with six months experience will satisfy the eligibility requirement for the Iowa DNR Wastewater Treatment Grade I. This course is also a good review for anyone planning to take the Wastewater Treatment Grade II exam. Hands-on application of math using real data is a new feature of this course. Textbooks (paid for by DOL grant): California State University at Sacramento, Wastewater Treatment Volumes I and II.
